“Dee felt a cold certainty settle in his gut. Eden’s presence here, conducting his own clandestine search in the middle of the night, confirmed what Dee had begun to suspect during their earlier meeting. Whatever game was being played around Kopernik’s death, Eden was more than Sir William’s messenger.<\/p>\n
For a moment, Dee considered simply remaining hidden and observing. But the room was small, and discovery was inevitable once Eden’s search brought him nearer the door. Better to control the revelation than be caught like a thief.<\/p>\n
“Looking for something specific, Master Eden?” Dee asked, stepping forward into the lantern light.<\/p>\n
Eden whirled, one hand going to his belt where Dee glimpsed the hilt of a dagger. Recognition dawned on his face, followed quickly by a forced smile.<\/p>\n
“Master Dee. This is unexpected.”<\/p>\n
“I might say the same”, replied Dee. “What are you doing here?”<\/p>\n
“I prefer to conduct certain of Sir William’s inquiries without… distractions,” Eden replied smoothly. “But perhaps you’d care to explain your own presence? I don’t recall authorising a search of these premises.”<\/p>\n
“And I don’t recall requiring your authorisation,” Dee countered. “Sir William asked for my assistance to understand Kopernik’s work and to retrieve his papers – so here I am, doing his bidding. As I promised him.”<\/p>\n
“And have you? Found anything, that is?” Prompted Eden.<\/p>\n
“Well, no,” lied Dee. “Somebody seems to have searched it most thoroughly already.”<\/p>\n
The two men regarded each other in the dim lantern light, each assessing the other’s veracity and intentions. It was Eden who broke the tense silence.<\/p>\n
