“Dee leaned forward, trying to get a better look at the array of manuscripts and instruments laid on the table, all frustrating far from his rearmost position. He cursed his lateness once again.
\nBeside an astrolabe of exquisite craftsmanship lay an intriguing device that Dee could not recognise, a series of interlocking brass rings and dials that seemed to be a mechanical echo of the heavens themselves.
\n“The movements of the celestial bodies,” continued Kopernik, “follow patterns that can be measured, calculated, and, most importantly, predicted. With a proper understanding of these patterns and their projection to the earth, the skilled astronomer can understand their influence upon the tides of human affairs.”
\nA murmur rippled through the audience. Whilst astrology remained a respected field of inquiry, Kopernik’s claims went beyond the conventional, challenging the balance previously established by the church.
\nFor the next hour, the elderly Pole demonstrated his methods, occasionally consulting a small leather-bound journal whose cramped notations were far too distant for Dee to discern. He showed how to calculate the positions of planets at future dates, and how those relative positions and paths of travel could be combined to forecast events ranging from weather patterns to political trends and even ruling dynasties.
\nFinally, he turned to his most elaborate brass instrument, his voice taking on a renewed vigour.
\n“This device, gentlemen, is the result of thirty years of refinement. It allows for rapid calculation of the planetary positions, alignments, and aspects.” His gnarled fingers manipulated the dials with surprising dexterity. “What might take hours with quill and paper can be accomplished in minutes.”
\nDee stared at the old man in awe, his mind racing ahead to the applications and possibilities that such a tool could yield to the operator. It was precisely this sort of intellectual challenge that Robert had known would captivate Dee’s mind.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
